14 Glasgow Road

Photographs of Lockerbie Ice Rink visitors, October 23 - March 24

Portraits of a community space where old-fashioned, traditional fun takes place. A functional 1960s building situated on Glasgow Road on the edge of Lockerbie town in Scotland, it opened on January 20, 1967. Not fancy inside or out - it’s real, it’s cold, and you wrap up.

Upon entering, the utilitarian aesthetic, mix of skaters of all ages bundled-up in colourful woollens, and the warm welcoming glow of Jodie’s cafe offer a feeling of nostalgia - like a film set of an early coming-of-age movie.

It’s a place without judgment: an endearing honesty and a feeling that anybody is welcome. The young stewards add to the charm amidst the hustle and bustle - just get your skates on and get on the ice.

Used for skating, curling, ice hockey and even a wedding in the out-of-season summer months, it’s a space about people doing something for the fun of it.

I met so many people: regulars, visitors, stewards - and I want to thank them all for helping me with this project.

I hope it never gets a revamp; it’s perfect just the way it is.
